My husband, Raafat Kamal, started to suffer neck pain for no obvious reason last year.
The neck pain increased to an intolerable level, and he also began to experience constant arm pain, numbness, and tingling in his fingertips. Our physician referred him to a specialist who found that several herniated discs were pressing on nerves in his neck.
Returning home, my husband decided to take the prescribed painkillers and see whether the problem would solve itself gradually, canceling the need for surgery. We prayed fervently about his neck for the next few weeks.
Thankfully, the pain gradually became more tolerable. On most days my husband could manage without painkillers if he was careful not to make any quick movements or carry anything too heavy.
However, a few months later, Raafat suffered another injury. It seemed he had pulled a ligament in his upper arm. With this injury it became impossible for my husband to lift his arms above his head, further restricting his ability to move freely.
Then, as if things couldn’t get worse, this past September, my husband traveled to attend a union session in his division. During this trip, one evening in his hotel room, he accidentally tripped and fell, landing on his injured arm. As he fell on the floor he heard a cracking sound from his neck, followed by the most excruciating pain. Raafat was immensely relieved and thankful to God that he was able to get up from the floor because he was worried he had fractured his neck. By God’s grace, and numbed by strong painkillers, he managed to get through his appointments abroad.
Returning home to England, but in intense neck pain and with the General Conference Annual Council starting only a couple of weeks later, Raafat and I pleaded earnestly for God’s intervention for his health and for him to be able to cope with his upcoming trip to the United States.
The Lord intervened and heard our prayers. Amazingly, Raafat suffered no pain whatsoever during our trans-Atlantic flight and on the first morning after his arrival woke up realizing that his neck pain was completely gone. And not only that. For the first time in a year and a half he was able to lift both of his arms above his head with no restrictions or pain!
We believe that God provided nothing less than a miracle. I share this story to give thanks, praise, and glory to God, and to encourage others that we serve a God who still loves to hear and answer our prayers.
