Jump to Prayer FocusBible Passage for Meditation: Ephesians 4:1-7
Key Verse: “Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:3
As I studied Ephesians today, I found myself repeatedly reading the same passage over and over. In fact, my Bible has been open to the same spot all day, Ephesians 4: “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (verses 1-3).
This passage is so simple, yet so complex. You and I are called, we are chosen, and we are reminded by Paul that we are to deal with each other just as Christ has dealt with us, with gentleness and love. We are to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. However, what does unity look like when we have so many different perspectives and angles on how things should be done?
Ellen White gives us a glimpse: “We are one in faith in the fundamental truths of God’s Word. And one object must be kept in view constantly, that is harmony and cooperation must be maintained without compromising one principle of truth.”
This is powerful, yet she continues with a warning. “And while constantly digging for the truth as for hidden treasure, be careful how you open new and conflicting opinions. We have a worldwide message. The commandments of God and the testimonies of Jesus Christ are the burden of our work. To have unity and love for one another is the great work now to be carried on” (Pastoral Ministry, p. 30).
Hmmm. Serious message. Maintaining love and unity may not seem like an easy task at times like this, but God is not asking us for the impossible. He never does. He’s simply asking that we yield so He can work the impossible through us. This is His church, His work. He will accomplish His purposes if we allow Him to.
I am humbled that God has trusted us, trusted me, with His Spirit. I am humbled that He is willing to guide me through His Word in order that I might be used by Him to lead others to the truth of Who Jesus is. Let this remain our focus. Let this be our mission. Let us be united in His love.
Heart Prayer Challenge:
Heavenly Father, we are at a crossroads in many ways. We need Your Holy Spirit to lead and guide our every action and reaction, to guide our thoughts and control our tongues. We want to follow Your truth, but You must help us. You tell us in Your Word to “study to shew ourselves approved unto God, workmen that needeth not to be ashamed rightly dividing the Word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15). Rather than leaning on others to make decisions for us, help us to study out the truths of Your Word for ourselves as we are accountable to honor these truths. This is not easy. We pray for Your Spirit of meekness to be poured out upon us as never before. And at last, we pray that Mrs. White’s vision of “What Might Have Been” will finally be fulfilled. Help us, Lord! We desperately need You. In Jesus’ precious name we pray, Amen.
