Jump to Prayer FocusBible Passage for Meditation: Luke 4:14-21
Key Verse: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.” Luke 4:18
Have you ever met a person about whom you could say, “Here is a mighty man or woman of God! Here is someone led by the Spirit!”?
Maybe they were not famous. Maybe they did not even have diplomas or degrees, but it was obvious that God was teaching and using them in a mighty way. Why? Because they were walking in the light that God had given them. They were using their talents to bless others. They were unselfish and servant-hearted, humble and prayerful. An atmosphere of peace surrounded them. Most of all, their faith and trust in God was their foundation, giving them a steadfastness of purpose that would not be compromised or swayed, no matter the cost.
This person, while obviously blessing the lives of many, wasn’t looking for applause or trying to take credit for what they had accomplished. Rather, they were continually giving all the glory back to Jesus. In everything they said and did, they pointed you to Jesus.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that they didn’t have limitations, but they acknowledged them with humbleness. They weren’t afraid to say, “I don’t know the answer to that question,” or to admit when they did wrong. And then, even when they failed, they sought to use those times as opportunities to grow.
What a blessing to meet such people!
For the past couple of months my husband and I have been traveling to different health institutions, trying to learn how to be better medical missionaries after God’s own heart. We praise God that we have met a few people who exemplify to us what it means to be a medical missionary filled with the Holy Spirit. Seeing their godly, humble examples has inspired us and made us want to follow in their footsteps.
We are told in the Spirit of Prophecy, “We have come to a time when every member of the church should take hold of medical missionary work” (Testimonies for the Church, vol. 7, p. 62).
However, becoming a true medical missionary is not just about learning how to use hydrotherapy treatments or natural remedies or about learning how to train others to cook healthfully. It’s so much more.
What Christ needs are medical missionaries who do not trust in their own abilities and knowledge but in Him and His power. He needs people who will pray for the Holy Spirit and wrestle with God in prayer until their prayers are answered on behalf of others. He wants people who are humble and dependent on Him. As Inspiration tells us, “There is no limit to the usefulness of the one who, putting self aside, makes room for the working of the Holy Spirit upon his heart and lives a life wholly consecrated to God” (Christian Service, p. 254).
Do you want God’s power to be manifested in your life? Training is great. We need knowledge. But what we need most is divine wisdom with Heaven’s blessing. If you want to be a Spirit-filled medical missionary or worker for Christ, then join me in the following prayer.
Heart Prayer Challenge:
Dear Heavenly Father, we come to You because we realize there is nothing good in us. We’ve trusted many times in our own strength and skills, and we have failed miserably. We want to learn how to depend on You. We want to be led by Your Holy Spirit. Help us to see more and more our need of the Holy Spirit. Help us, Father, to be teachable. Help us to humble ourselves. And help us to learn to listen to Your voice and follow the guidance of Your Holy Spirit so we can be mighty workers for You. Thank You that You are more willing to give us this gift than we are to give good gifts to our children. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
