Jump to Prayer FocusBible Passage for Meditation: Joel 2:15-32
Key Verse: “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.” Joel 2:28
Throughout the 100 Days of Prayer our key focus in prayer has been on a greater outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Now, for the next ten days, this will also be the primary theme of our devotionals. However, if we aren’t careful, this prayer can turn into a mere repetition of the same request over and over without real heart change.
Let me explain:
While we need to pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we need to pray this prayer intelligently. Praying intelligently means we are praying that the Spirit will have free rein in our lives. Praying intelligently means we are asking for the Holy Spirit to change us—our heart, thoughts, attitudes, habits, and, in short, our whole lives. (Just as the disciples prayed in the upper room!)
When our sinful, selfish, prideful human hearts and minds are made into something completely new—into lives that fully manifest the power of God’s love—the greatest evidence of Holy Spirit filling has already occurred! However, we are praying that we would experience this as a church collectively. When we have this experience as a church, the Latter Rain will fall, and what a work will then take place.
Speaking of this coming outpouring, Ellen White writes, “In visions of the night, representations passed before me of a great reformatory movement among God’s people. Many were praising God. The sick were healed and other miracles were wrought. A spirit of intercession was seen, even as was manifested before the great day of Pentecost. Hundreds and thousands were seen visiting families and opening before them the Word of God. Hearts were convicted by the power of the Holy Spirit, and a spirit of genuine conversion was manifest. On every side doors were thrown open to the proclamation of the truth. The world seemed lightened with the heavenly influence. Great blessings were received by the true and humble people of God. I heard voices of thanksgiving and praise, and there seemed to be a reformation such as we witnessed in 1844” (Counsels on Health, p. 580, emphasis supplied).
Even now I believe we are fast approaching seeing this vision fulfilled as I see more and more people coming together all around the world to pray and plead for the Holy Spirit. I believe it’s close to being a reality!
Whatever the case, I want to part of this final revival and reformation. How about you? It is possible!
Heart Prayer Challenge:
Dear Heavenly Father, as we are getting closer and closer to the General Conference Session, our hearts continue to be burdened on behalf of our church. We need what only You can do. We need Your Holy Spirit to fall upon us, to change us, to work among us and through us. We want to be part of this last great final movement of sharing the gospel with the world, but we are not ready, Lord. Please change our hearts! Change us from the inside out. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
