Jump to Prayer FocusBible Passage for Meditation: Genesis 32:22-30
Key Verse: “I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.” Genesis 32:26
A few years ago I was leading the prayer room at a youth congress in Germany. Over 1,600 young people were attending the meetings, but it seemed that not many were interested in praying, especially not together. As I prayed about this situation, I remembered the story of John Knox.
“If we have the interest that John Knox had when he pleaded before God for Scotland, we shall have success. He cried, ‘Give me Scotland, Lord, or I die.’ And when we take hold of the work and wrestle with God, saying, ‘I must have souls; I will never give up the struggle,’ we shall find that God will look upon our efforts with favor” (Evangelism, p. 294).
Inspired by the thought of John Knox’s prayer, I wrestled with God in prayer for several hours that night: “Lord, give me Germany, or I die.” It was a small attempt to hold on by faith to a big God; however, God faithfully answered this prayer in amazing ways beyond my wildest expectations. The very next day I saw the love of prayer start to spread, and many people overcame their fear of praying aloud with others. Not only that, but a little over two years later God gave me a German husband. The second part of God’s answer to this prayer was quite amazing, because only a few months before the conference I’d told a friend that I could never marry a German man. (For some reason, I was quite set on this!) So God has a unique sense of humor, as now my husband and I have been living and serving in Germany. Truly, God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think. But He wants us to ask large things of Him, and to put His Word to the test!
Inspiration tells us, “It was because Elijah was a man of large faith that God could use him in this grave crisis in the history of Israel. As he prayed, his faith reached out and grasped the promises of Heaven, and he persevered in prayer until his petitions were answered. He did not wait for the full evidence that God had heard him, but was willing to venture all on the slightest token of divine favor. And yet what he was enabled to do under God, all may do in their sphere of activity in God’s service. . . . Faith such as this is needed in the world today—faith that will lay hold on the promises of God’s word and refuse to let go until Heaven hears” (Prayer, p. 138).
Do you have a burden for souls? Do you want more of this burden? Then pray the following Heart Prayer Challenge with me.
Heart Prayer Challenge:
Lord, we come to You because You are the One who can change our hearts and give us more love for the lost. As we pray for the outpouring of Your Holy Spirit upon our church, make us willing to do whatever it takes to see more souls brought into the Kingdom. Help us not to be afraid to sacrifice as we reach out to Your children. Teach us how to wrestle with You in prayer for the salvation of souls. Help us to hold on like Jacob, like Elijah, like John Knox, and like others who said, “I will not let go except You bless me.” Thank You for the example of Jesus, who spent entire nights in prayer and who worked untiringly to bring physical and spiritual healing to those who needed it. Help us to follow His example. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
