Bible Passage for Meditation: John 6:27-35
Key Verse: “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” John 6:35
“A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb, But to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet” (Proverbs 27:7).
There is nothing that keeps me from craving junk food like a full stomach. If I’m hungry enough, almost anything can be appetizing. But when I’m completely full, even that favorite dessert is no longer hard to pass by at potluck.
I’ve discovered that this is also true in my Christian walk. If I’m hungry enough, almost anything can be appetizing. But if I’m spiritually full from spending time with Jesus in His Word, the things of the world don’t attract me near as easily.
Unfortunately, despite my best intentions to do what’s right, my cravings often get the best of me, because I haven’t been filling myself with enough heavenly food. So I fall for that empty junk food that the enemy offers, even though I know it’s only going to hurt me.
That’s what makes the following promise so incredibly powerful to me: “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst” (John 6:35).
Wow! Talk about an incredible diet plan! Jesus promises that we will NEVER hunger and NEVER thirst when we come to Him.
Now, those listening to Jesus might have thought He was referring to physical food, so Jesus had to make it very plain how we can feed on Him: “…The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). Jesus’ promise is that He will feed us—satisfy us— by His Word.
Now I realize why at times I’ve had such a hard time resisting the enemy’s temptations. Too often I’ve let myself get to the place where I’m starving. And when I’ve neglected to take time feeding on Christ through His Word, I find today’s temptations are much harder to resist and get victory over. But when I’m filled with Jesus—satisfied by His Word—I no longer crave the empty pleasures of this old world.
So join me! Let’s feed upon Christ and upon His Living Word today. For only He can satisfy!
Heart Prayer Challenge
Dear Father in heaven, As we continue praying for our church, the cry of our hearts today is that You would give us more of Jesus! We are tired of finding this world appetizing. Please satisfy us with Jesus so that everything else will be empty and unappetizing in comparison. Give us a hunger and thirst for Your Word and for things of eternal value. Thank You that as we come to You, we will NEVER hunger and NEVER thirst, for You have promised that You will give us living bread. Thank you Father for hearing these prayers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
