An Invitation from the Lord – By Derek Morris

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” (Psalm 32:8 NIV).

I experienced a fulfillment of this promise just a few weeks ago. When the search committee for the Hope Channel Board asked me if I would be willing to serve as President of Hope Channel, my first response was surprise. I had happily served as a volunteer for the past ten years, helping to create programs like The Life and Teachings of Jesus and Hope Sabbath School. But this was a new frontier. How should I respond? I was scheduled to film new episodes of Ministry in Motion all that day and the committee was requesting an answer by mid-afternoon.

Without a doubt, I needed to claim the promise of the LORD recorded by the psalmist 3,000 years ago in Psalm 32:8. I was also reminded of the words of the LORD through the prophet Jeremiah: “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3, NKJV).

As I was walking to the Hope Channel studio to begin a day of filming, I noticed the multiple screens on the lobby wall showing current programs on various Hope Channel affiliates. On one screen I was teaching Hope Sabbath School. On another screen someone was interviewing one of my favorite preachers, Dwight Nelson, on Ministry in Motion. When the camera shot changed, I discovered I was the interviewer. Suddenly it dawned on me—God had been preparing me for this day for the past decade. His promise was already being fulfilled: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”

My wife and I had lunch together and spent some special time in prayer. I also called my spiritual mentor, Dr. Jack Blanco, and asked him to intercede on our behalf. God was giving us peace as we moved through the day, but He was about to give us two other remarkable indications of His leading.

Later that same afternoon, one of the vice presidents of the General Conference came to me with tears in his eyes. He told me he had spent significant time in prayer for me that day and exclaimed, “The committee is not calling you; God is calling you.” I was startled by his words, but not shocked by his counsel. About the same time, I received a phone call from Dr. Blanco. “I was praying for you, Derek. I didn’t know what you should do, but then the strong conviction came to me: ‘Call Derek and tell him to take the assignment.’ ”

I’m so thankful for the privilege of prayer, for praying friends, praying mentors, and a prayer-answering God! His invitation is offered to each one of us: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”

Derek Morris, President of Hope Channel, and former editor of Ministry Magazine.

Practical Application:

Are you facing a change in career or a difficult decision and not sure what you should do? Consider the following counsel from the book Education.

“We need to follow more closely God’s plan of life. To do our best in the work that lies nearest, to commit our ways to God, and to watch for the indications of His providence—these are rules that ensure safe guidance in the choice of an occupation.” Education, p. 267

Dear Heavenly Father, Many of us are facing important decisions. But we don’t want to make our decisions based on our own thoughts or desires. We want You to lead us. We want You to show us the way, for we want to stay in the center of Your will. Thank You that You have promised to guide and direct our steps when we seek You! In Jesus’ precious name, Amen!

Promises to Claim: Isa. 30:21, Prov. 3:5,6, Ps. 32:8, Ps. 119:105

God wants His work to move and calling you at such a time is the best and by accepting the invitation you did just the right thing. Praise God for knowing why you should be the one to work in His field this time. So Pastor, just like God said to Elijah, (1 Kings 19:7 KJV) And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.

  • Rosalia

Amen. When duty calls. We thank God for you Pastor Morris and we are praying for you. I am encouraged by the words of the Psalmist quoted. God will direct us as long as we remain faithful

As I read the practical application by Pastor Morris, tears continued to flow. I’m struggling with situations in my life, that don’t seems to get solved, although prayers are being offered, now I realise I need to get others to pray with and for me. The scripture texts have bought comfort and will endeavour to memorise them. Pastor God will continue to guide you your wife as he has in the past. I enjoy the sabbath school discussion and scripture songs, my question is will you continue to be host? May our Father continue to bless and keep you all at Hopetv covered.

I’m happy for you Pastor Morris, and may you be blessed as you have blessed us with your comments and blogs on RBHW/BHP daily Bible reading. Since you have received many prayer requests in the past, I remember you saying in one of my comments re my unbelieving son Patrick who is a kidney patient waiting for a transplant, that you will pray for him. Please continue praying for him, not so much for healing, but more for his salvation. He blames all religions for the problems and miseries in the world, especially the Muslim religion.Thank you Pastor Morris, and may God bless you always

  • Victoria

    Amen. Glory to God

What a blessing it is to know that God is directing you; this testimony inspires confidence that you are chosen for a purpose. Pretty sure your enemy, Satan, is not pleased and will unleash whatever he can think of to derail your effectiveness. Not a problem, because he is already defeated. Stay strong in the Lord, pastor.

Pastor Derek, I was praying for you also. I felt a strong urge that you may be the Elisha, Cohen by God to carry on His work. I told a couple of people that for a few days after the announcement of the retirement of the Thorps, that I did not see any postings from you, and felt that you had ‘gone to the desert’ to be alone with God..We continue to pray for the success of Hope Channel, Sabbath school, and all the means provided by our Heavenly Father for soul seeking, searching, and saving. Praise His Holy name.

  • Desiree

Pastor Morris, we love you and wish you the best. My advice to you is: “In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.” May God continue to bless you as you lead out in this most important ministry.

  • Cal & Kathy

    Pastor Morris:

Kathy and I shall continue to pray for you and your family. We have been so blessed by your guidance these past few months through both RBHW and BHP and personally. You, these programs, Hope Sabbath School and a few other dear SDAs have been angels of immeasurable value to the two of us in our new found walk with God. It was just over five years ago that we first walked through the doors of our local SDA church and left Babylon. What a journey we have traveled following the new light and truth of the Three Angels message. Derek, you are a major part of that journey. God bless you.
