“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go. I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” (Psalm 32:8 NIV).
I experienced a fulfillment of this promise just a few weeks ago. When the search committee for the Hope Channel Board asked me if I would be willing to serve as President of Hope Channel, my first response was surprise. I had happily served as a volunteer for the past ten years, helping to create programs like The Life and Teachings of Jesus and Hope Sabbath School. But this was a new frontier. How should I respond? I was scheduled to film new episodes of Ministry in Motion all that day and the committee was requesting an answer by mid-afternoon.
Without a doubt, I needed to claim the promise of the LORD recorded by the psalmist 3,000 years ago in Psalm 32:8. I was also reminded of the words of the LORD through the prophet Jeremiah: “Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know” (Jeremiah 33:3, NKJV).
As I was walking to the Hope Channel studio to begin a day of filming, I noticed the multiple screens on the lobby wall showing current programs on various Hope Channel affiliates. On one screen I was teaching Hope Sabbath School. On another screen someone was interviewing one of my favorite preachers, Dwight Nelson, on Ministry in Motion. When the camera shot changed, I discovered I was the interviewer. Suddenly it dawned on me—God had been preparing me for this day for the past decade. His promise was already being fulfilled: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
My wife and I had lunch together and spent some special time in prayer. I also called my spiritual mentor, Dr. Jack Blanco, and asked him to intercede on our behalf. God was giving us peace as we moved through the day, but He was about to give us two other remarkable indications of His leading.
Later that same afternoon, one of the vice presidents of the General Conference came to me with tears in his eyes. He told me he had spent significant time in prayer for me that day and exclaimed, “The committee is not calling you; God is calling you.” I was startled by his words, but not shocked by his counsel. About the same time, I received a phone call from Dr. Blanco. “I was praying for you, Derek. I didn’t know what you should do, but then the strong conviction came to me: ‘Call Derek and tell him to take the assignment.’ ”
I’m so thankful for the privilege of prayer, for praying friends, praying mentors, and a prayer-answering God! His invitation is offered to each one of us: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”
